About this episode
Most practice owners who want to grow reach for implants, orthodontics or an agency. Dr Barry Oulton ruled out all three. He took a private practice in Surrey from £250,000 a year to just under £1.1 million, working three and a half days a week in the chair, and he did it without spending a penny on external marketing for eighteen years.
The growth did not come from the dentistry. It came from the conversation around it. Barry went down a rabbit hole of human-need psychology, neurolinguistic programming and the psychology of influence, then rebuilt the entire patient journey around what he learned. His hardest day used to be a twelve hour Wednesday that grossed £600. His best became a Tuesday, nine till three, grossing around £4,000 from half a dozen patients.
In this conversation he takes apart the mechanics: how the diary was zoned so nothing under £1,000 of production could touch his best hours, why three crowns take ten minutes longer than one, why you should never answer "how much is an implant?" with a number, and the injection technique he says made him several million pounds. He also talks honestly about selling the practice, the earn-out he never received, and the two mistakes he would tell any owner to avoid.
